William J. Lutz, Jr (Bill) 91, died peacefully on November 24, 2016 at Meadow Ridge, Redding CT, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Born in New York City and raised on City Island, Bronx NY, he was the eldest son of the late Helene and William Lutz. Bill is survived by Eileen, his beloved wife of 68 years, a daughter Helene Lutz and her husband William Shea, three sons William and his wife Dawn, Stephen and wife Enid Dachs, and James, and by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One son, Peter, preceded him in death. Two of Bill's four brothers, Robert and Peter, also survive him; brothers John and Edward pre-deceased him.
Bill was a Naval officer during World War Two. While a member of the Navy's V-12 officer's candidate program, he was sent to Harvard for a year of study, during which time he was also a member of the Harvard College Varsity Baseball Team. After the war, he completed his undergraduate studies at Fordham University followed by an LL.B. from Fordham Law School. He was a member of the New York Bar.
Rather than law, Bill spent his career working for Bankers Trust Company (now Deutsche Bank). After 35 years, he retired as First Vice President and head of the Investment Advisory Division of the bank's Trust Department.
Bill and Eileen lived for many years in Greenwich CT, but after retirement golf lured them to Georgia and then Florida. Besides golf, Bill was active during retirement with volunteer work at his parish church, with St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah, and with Eileen in Savannah's inner-city soup kitchen. In 2005, Bill and Eileen returned in Connecticut to be close to family, settling at Meadow Ridge Retirement Community.
