Obituary

Suzanne Embry Thompson Davies, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, leader, mentor, died peacefully in Redding, CT on September 6th.  Suzanne had recently celebrated her 94th birthday with all four children, wearing funny hats, eating cake and the ice cream she loved.

Sue met her husband – Edward A. Davies – eighty years ago when they were young teenagers in Greenwich, CT.  Their bond was enduring:  both an epic romance and a professional alliance.   They married, nurtured immediate and extended families, travelled, explored New York's cultural bounty – be it opera or the Public's original production of Hair.  And, crucially, Sue stood shoulder to shoulder with Ed in building a pediatric practice that cared for generations of children.  She kept everything running seamlessly and was largely considered to be "the heart and soul of the office:  smart, kind, and always gracious".   Many patients, now adults, have shared that she made them feel welcome and safe.

To the communities in which they resided, Suzanne's contributions were substantive.  She was president of The Spence School Board of Trustees, chaired the Brick Church Women's Association Student Scholarship Program and embraced the Junior League's ethos of advancing women's leadership through volunteer action.  In CT, Sue expanded the scope of the Mark Twain Library's development initiatives, sorted books for the book fair in the "back room" and was an active member of the League of Women Voters.

Suzanne Davies attended the Rippowam Cisqua School in Bedford, NY and graduated from The Greenwich Academy and Smith College.  She spoke Spanish fluently, having spent a portion of her undergraduate study in Mexico City.  This competence was refined when Ed received orders to report to the Morón Nato Air Base in De la Frontera, Spain.  They opted to live in Seville, sending their young daughters to a local school, donning flamenco attire during Feria, and fully embracing the neighborhood of calle Montevideo.  Her lifelong curiosity of and enthusiasm for people led to friendships with an expat community that would be comfortable in a Hemmingway novel.

Suzanne is survived by her children and their spouses – Wendy Davies and Walter Johnsen, Kim O'Rielly, Becca Davies and Jeremy Kramer, and James Davies, her grandchildren Walter Johnsen, Alex VanRielly (Lisa), Chris and Jim O'Rielly, Stewart (Devon), Edward (Katie), Daisy and George Kramer, William and Peter Davies, and her great grandchildren, Patricia and Xaviar VanRielly and Lucas O'Rielly.  She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Edward Davies, her grandson Thomas Davies, her parents Dorothy and Nelson Thompson, and brother James Thompson.

We will remember her vibrancy, Andalusian gazpacho, holiday meals where each place setting was adorned with a wrapped surprise, and elaborate picnics by the pool at the CT home Sue and Ed shared for over fifty years.  Her laugh resounded.  She is missed.
