On the evening of March 11, 2016, Susan Griffin Senie passed away peacefully at her home in Meadow Ridge in Redding, CT she was 85 years old. She was born in New York City on January 19, 1931 to Lucille Matthews Griffin and Gerald Griffin. When she was 14 years old her family moved to Westport, Connecticut. She graduated from Staples High school and attended the University of Bridgeport. Susan married attorney Alan H. Senie in 1951 at the Westport Women's Club. Together they raised four children; Matthew, Christopher, Kathryn (K.C.) and Allyson. They lived more than 50 years on the shores of the Saugatuck River, first at Burritt's Landing and later at Saugatuck Shores. When her youngest child started school, Sue became a commercial real estate broker, one of the first women in this field. She started her own firm, Commercial Properties and eventually came to own several buildings in downtown Westport and Stamford. She was tremendously skilled in finding good properties to buy, improve, and resell or to hold onto as an investment. An innovative and adventurous individual, Sue pursued her pilot's license in order to explore real estate from a birds' eye view. Her love of flying extended beyond her business interests and one of her more thrilling flying experiences included co-piloting a plane to California. In addition to being a successful businesswoman, Sue was a political activist. During the Vietnam War she organized and participated in many anti-war demonstrations. These included Saturday morning peace vigils on the steps of Westport Town Hall, demonstrations in Washington, D.C. and, on May 9, 1972, getting arrested for blocking traffic on the Saugatuck River Post Road Bridge in Westport. A Fairpress newspaper article at the time quoted her: "The police were really wonderful, while we knew they were doing their job, some of them indicated to us individually that they were sympathetic to our cause." Years later, Sue demonstrated on that same bridge with her daughter and granddaughters to protest the United States invasion of Iraq and later still, to stand for gun safety measures following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. She also participated in Occupy Wall Street and supported Black Lives Matter demonstrations. Throughout her life she espoused a liberal and compassionate view of humanity and instilled these beliefs in each of her children and grandchildren. For the past 12 years, Sue lived at Meadow Ridge in Redding, Connecticut. After her husband Alan's death in 2006, Sue fell in love with Ray Eyes, a fellow Meadow Ridge resident. Sue and Ray were partners over the past five years until his death this past July, 2015. The two were marvelous friends, and travelled the world, from Arizona to Argentina. Sue would often reflect: "I couldn't believe how lucky we were to have found friendship, fun, stimulating conversation, travel and love so late in life." Sue's greatest attribute was her kindness that extended to strangers, political causes, neighbors, friends, children, grandchildren, and many adopted pets. She is survived by her children and their spouses; Matthew and Janine Senie of Westborough, Massachusetts, Christopher Senie and Kathryn Rosenblum of Brewster, Massachusetts, K.C. Senie and Creighton English of Redding, Connecticut, Allyson Senie and Roger Colaizzi of Alexandria, Virginia, as well as eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Though she will be dearly missed, her spirit will live on in the good deeds that we do. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Unitarian Church in Westport at 10 Lyons Plains Road, Westport on Sunday April 17, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Norwalk Community College Foundation in her memory. Donations will contribute to the NCC Student Emergency Fund.
