Robert W
Mickayl
Jan 17, 1936 — Feb 6, 2017
Robert W. Mickayl (Bob) of Brookfield, CT died February 6, 2017 in his sleep. His wife of 45 years, Peggy, his daughter Naomi, and her husband, Gary Gauruder of Milford CT were with him. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Sara Curtis, his step-brother Joel Mickayl, his wife Carol, nieces Joelle and Jennifer, and their children.
Besides his family that he loved, Bob's animals, especially his horses, were his passion. He worked for many years in the horse industry under such notable horsemen as George Morris, Frank Chapot and Ronnie Mutch. Bob was a favored "R" judge in Hunters, Equitation and Jumpers, and was a well respected horseman and trainer. Outside of the show ring, he also enjoyed Fox Hunting, and was awarded his colors by the Fairfield County Hounds. Bob shared the love of horses with his wife Peggy, and together they created quite an equine management team, where the horse's care was first priority. Passing down his passion for riding and developing young horses, Bob trained his daughter Naomi during her youth. Together, they proudly made up all of Naomi's horses from inexperienced, green youngsters. Carrying on the tradition, Naomi is currently a professional horsewoman, and Bob was always on hand to give his opinions and advice as she continued to develop young horses and compete. In 1976 Bob and his wife started Continental Awards, an award ribbon manufacturing business that serviced primarily horse shows and dog shows. Bob actively participated in his company until his death. In his spare time, Bob was an avid reader, and a stack of library books could always be found within reach of his chair.
Friends may call on his family Monday, February 13, 2017 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at Bouton Funeral Home 31 W Church Street, Georgetown CT. There will be a private family burial.
In honor of Bob's unwavering care for his animals, the family has created an emergency equine veterinary fund in his memory, which will be available to aid owners during times of unforeseen emergency expenses. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Robert Mickayl Equine Emergency Fund, C/O New England Equine Practice, 2933 Route 22, Patterson, NY 12563.
