Obituary

Peter Appleby Trotman, died January 27, 2024, aged 91. Born in Hambrook, Gloucestershire, UK in 1932, his childhood was shaped around WWII. His father, Sir Arthur Edwin Trotman, was posted throughout the UK and overseas in the UK Ministry of Agriculture during much of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.  He spent much of his childhood with relatives in the UK, which fostered an early independence.  In 1941, the family, including his mother Vera and brother John, moved to Trinidad where Peter remained through high school.

He began his working years as an aeronautical engineering apprentice at Percival Aircraft Ltd. in Luton, Bedfordshire in the 1950s. Later he brought his engineering skills and intellect to the rapidly developing computer industry, joining IBM in the UK in 1960. He learned to ring English church bells, which was to become his passion, in his early twenties while serving as a second on a double date.

IBM played a central role in Peter's professional and personal life, as he met Louise Kane, on an IBM business trip to the US in the early 1960s. He emigrated to the US after he and Louise were wed and had lived in the UK for a year. His sons Julian and Adrian arrived in the late 1960s. IBM moved him up and down the eastern coast of the US.  Peter and Louise divorced in 1976. In 1980, Peter met Beverly Faber while working together at IBM. Beverly was dad's life partner. They enjoyed nearly 44 years together, largely spent in various pursuits around change ringing and alternately living in the UK (Melbourne, Derbyshire) and the US (Fairfield, CT and Stamford, CT).

Peter left IBM in the early 1990s and worked for a time as an engineer designing and installing church bells for Eayre and Smith, Ltd, UK. He spent his final years supporting change ringing in leading roles in both US and UK and managing the website for the Central Council of Change Bell Ringers, the organization that includes change ringers world-wide.
