Obituary

Mary Frances “Sandy” Mumbach, age 81, of Danbury, formerly of Wilton, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Regional Hospice. She was the beloved wife of Peter Mumbach.

Born in Mount Vernon, New York, she was the daughter of the late Ara Cambere and Marion Quinn Cambere. In addition to her husband, Peter, Sandy is survived by her sons, Jason (Trisha) and Matthew (Lindsay), and her beloved grandchildren, Alex, Kate, Grady, and Molly. She is also survived by her siblings, Kate Muller (Hal), John Cambere, and Rick Cambere (Katie); her sister-in-law, Roseanne Mumbach; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sandy was predeceased by her sister, Yvonne Cambere; her brother, Peter Cambere; and her brother-in-law, John Mumbach.

Sandy grew up in Mount Vernon, NY, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Manhattanville College around the time her family relocated to Greenwich, Connecticut. While working for Peter, her future husband, she helped transition the company to the digital age and became one of the pioneers of early computer programming. Once married, Sandy and Peter raised their two sons in Wilton, Connecticut. They would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on October 24.

Family was always a priority for Sandy, whether she was raising her sons or guiding her younger siblings when her own mother died at a young age. Her faith was central to her life, and she found many ways to live the Gospel and serve her church and community. She was a lector and Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Fatima and, later, Saint Francis of Assisi. She served as head of FISH in Wilton, coordinating volunteers to drive seniors long before Uber existed. Along with Peter, she frequently volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the soup kitchen, and Emmaus Youth Retreats, and was also an active volunteer with Minks to Sinks in Wilton. Sandy never saw a baby or a dog that she didn't have to stop and say hello to. Her love of helping others extended to co-training service dogs alongside at-risk youth. She was an avid reader and a founding member of a book club that has remained active since 1985. In the mid 1970’s Sandy appeared on The 20,000 Dollar Pyramid and won. Not content with winning just once, she later returned for Battle of the Champions—and won again.

All who knew and loved Sandy would agree that she firmly believed everyone was entitled to her opinion, and she was more than happy to share it! Thankfully, she was usually right… or at least she thought so.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Sandy on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 35 Norfield Road, Weston, CT 06883. Interment will be held at a later date. Please check back for updates.
