Mary Elizabeth Barwick Sink

March 28, 1923 – May 12, 2016

Mary Elizabeth Barwick Sink was born March 28, 1923 in Richmond, VA to Georgie Ruby Harper and Carlyle Jackson Barwick. She grew up in Greensboro, NC and was a graduate of Grimsley High School, Woman's College of the University of NC (BA, Class of '44), and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (MA).

She married Carl Jackson Sink of Winston-Salem, NC who predeceased her. They raised their family of three children in Winston-Salem, NC where she lived until 2003 after which she spent time in New York and Connecticut. She is survived by her children Frances Sink of Wilton, CT, Katherine Sink Somelofski of Margaretville, NY, Carl Jackson Sink, Jr. of Dayton, MD, and three grandchildren Peter Schork, James Sink, and Jaclyn Sink. She and the family attended the First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem. She was a docent at Reynolda House and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma society of women professionals in education.

Elizabeth began her career teaching English literature first at Woman's College (now UNC-Greensboro) and then in secondary education as a high school English teacher in Asheville and Winston-Salem, NC. Later in her career she pursued a Masters in Library Science. She was the Head Librarian at the RJ Reynolds when she retired.

Elizabeth contributed her time and energy supporting her alma mater UNCG, serving on and leading alumni and university committees including two years as president of the Alumni Association. In 1995 she was awarded the Alumni Distinguished Service Award. After retiring she and Jack pursued their love of travel in the US and abroad and their passion for collecting antiques.  Elizabeth and Jack endowed the Elizabeth Barwick and C Jackson Sink Graduate Fellowship in the Humanities at UNC-G.
