Martha Louise
Strange
Jan 6, 1946 — Oct 8, 2024
Martha Louise Strange, known to all as Louise or simply "Weez," passed away peacefully at her home in Weston surrounded by her family on October 8, 2024.
Louise was born to Polly and Henry David Watts on their family farm in Lexington, VA on January 6, 1946. She was the youngest of five children: William Watts, Henry David "Danny" Watts, Joyce Younger and Judie Tucker.
Louise attended Rockbridge High School, graduating in 1963. She was the first in her family to graduate from college, enrolling in James Madison College (now JMU), graduating in 1967 with a degree in Education and Math. At James Madison, Louise was a talented athlete, playing on the women's varsity basketball team. In addition to her Bachelor's, Louise also earned a Master's degree in education from Fairfield University in 1980 and a 6th year administrator's certification from Southern CT State University in 1991. Louise met her husband Don in Falls Church, Virginia in 1968 while she was teaching in Vienna, VA and Don was serving in the US Army in Washington, DC. The couple eventually settled in Weston in 1981. Louise worked for the Fairfield Public Schools for 33 years as a math and English teacher. The majority of her career was spent teaching 6th grade at Fairfield Woods Middle School. During her tenure there, she earned several awards, including the Connecticut Celebration of Excellence teaching award in 1986. While at Fairfield Woods Middle School, Louise also coached the Math Olympiads with her students winning awards every year.
Louise was known as a devoted wife and mother. Her love for her sons Christopher and Michael and their families permeated everything she did in her life. As did her love and caring for numerous nieces and nephews in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, North and South Carolina.
Her love for travel over the years brought her to Europe, Japan, Australia, Mexico and many other exotic locations. She enjoyed playing both piano and flute, sewing, cooking, and was not afraid to get her hands dirty outside in the garden. Later in life she took up running, competing in several half marathons.
She is survived by sisters Judie and Joyce, her husband Don of 53 years, two children, Michael and Christopher, their respective spouses, Melanie and Ilana, former daughter-in-law Julia, and three grandchildren: Sylvia (10), Magnolia (7) and McCoy (4).
The family would like to thank Dr. Alice Rusk, Dr. Wesley Calvin and the staff at Norwalk Hospital, Rachel and the staff at Visiting Nurse of Fairfield Hospice as well as the caregivers from BrightStar Care and Sheraton Caregivers for their years of warmth and compassion.
A wake for Louise will be held at Bouton Funeral Home, 31 West Church Street, Georgetown on Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. pm.
