Lawrence "Larry" T. Helstern, age 88, of Redding passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on Monday, October 21, 2024 at Regional Hospice & Home Care Center. He was the devoted husband of Lena (Serio) Helstern.
Born in Staten Island, New York on July 28, 1936, he was a son of the late Kurt and Alice Brennan Helstern. Larry worked as an operations manager in the shipping industry for the majority of his working career. He was a history buff who read extensively about various war times especially World War II. Later in life Larry became an avid cyclist racking up 50 mile days on a regular basis. He was fond of keeping his old bikes in tip top condition.
Larry is survived by his wife of 65 years Lena, devoted father of Tom (Kathy) Helstern, Patricia (Mike) Martin and Gary (Doreen) Helstern. Beloved grandfather of Heather Terry (Craig), Michael Martin (Kim), Nicholas Martin (Kayla), Scott Martin, Christopher Helstern, Rebecca Carpinona (Michael), Stephanie Helstern and Nicholas Helstern. Larry especially loved children and enjoyed his great grandchildren, Christopher Andrews, Mikayla Terry, Julianna Terry, and Jackson Martin. Larry is also survived by his nephews Bobby Smith, Brian Kenney and Kevin Kenney. In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by his sister, Carol Smith and her husband Bob.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Larry on Friday, October 25, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Redding. Interment will immediately follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Ridgefield. Friends may greet the family on Thursday, October 24, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Bouton Funeral Home, 31 West Church Street, Georgetown (Wilton).
