Obituary

Kuldar Visnapuu, October 6,1941-July 9th, 2025.

Kuldar was born in Tartu Estonia. He fled with his parents, Johannus and Helene, and brothers, Aarrni and Mati when the Russians marched in and set Tallian on fire. He spent the next 7 years as a child in an Estonian refugee camp in Germany during and after WWII until the United States allowed the Estonians to enter the U.S.

The Lutheran church sponsored the family with several stipulations: a years employment, verification as a non-communist sympathizer, no legal convictions, nor any mental illness within the family. As an act of mercy, our  government allowed the Estonias  to sail to Ellis Island. From there the family traveled by train to South Dakota and ultimately to Sioux City Iowa.

Kuldar excelled in college as a math and physics major. Living at home while attending college he did just about every job available for a bright, handsome, stoic Estonian immigrate.

As graduation approached, he applied to the Air Force Academy. However, chosen second in line, he quickly applied to and was accepted with acommitment to the Air National Guard to go to pilots training in Laredo Texas. Again excelling and receiving his wings, he was honored to have been chosen to attend fighter school. His future was to fly the first super sonic jet, the F-100, for the Iowa Air National Guard. Having acquired the nickname "Koot" as a child, the name stuck, and became his call name in Vietnam.

This Estonian flew 256 missions for this country. He was shot down and rescued. Following his military career, he flew another  35 years with American Airlines. He retired having flown every new plane available throughout his career. His greatest pride was having been the captain of a Triple 777.

We celebrated our 59th wedding anniversary, July 3rd, 2025. The enduring love between us was there to our last moments together.

Kuldar is survived by 3 sons, Scott, Neil and Maximilian, our daughter-in-law, Carol, and their precious children, our grandchildren, Alexander 'Kuldar' Visnapuu and Emma Elizabeth Visnapuu. As well as our niece, Dr. Sara Timmerman, her husband Dr. Robert Flood, and their children, Katelyn and Robert, with whom he was very close.

Kuldar was and will always be the love of my life. I will miss the call "Sandra where are you my pet?"
