Judy Barbier Hitter passed away peacefully on December 17 at Norwalk Hospital.
Born on May 3rd 1936 in Detroit, Judy was the daughter of Theodore Barbier and Virginia Hubbard Barbier.
In early childhood, the family moved to her beloved Hickory Island, Michigan, where from her front porch she could look across the river at Canada and the vast expanse of Lake Erie. A favorite pastime was watching the ocean and lake freighters passing through the Livingston Channel. Judy always knew it was time to go home for dinner when the steamship "City of Detroit" passed by on it's daily run from Detroit to Buffalo.
Judy graduated from Grosse Ile Michigan High School as part of a class of 42 students, most of whom still meet for a reunion weekend every few years. Following high school, she attended Michigan State University, majoring in Child Development and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. There she met her future husband, Ron, on a blind date at a fraternity "Cha Cha" party.
A year and a half later they were married at St. James Episcopal Church, a National Historic Site, on Grosse Ile. This began their 58 year marriage odyssey in military and corporate life which took them from Michigan to Texas to New Hampshire, where Judy attended the University of New Hampshire. They then returned to Michigan, from there moved to Illinois and eventually to Wilton. What was expected to be a two year stint became 41 friend-filled years in Wilton.
Judy was very active in community activities including Minks to Sinks/Family and Children's Agency, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Wilton Food Bank, the Turnover Shop and The Wilton Garden Club. For a number of years she owned her own antique business "The Grand Trunk" which specialized in country furniture and restored trunks.
Judy is survived by her husband Ron, daughters Julie and husband Jim Childers of Atlanta, (grandchildren Marissa, Christopher and Jessica), Sherry and husband JD Lapple of Barrington Illinois, (grandson Kolby), Susan Rosetti of Atlanta, (granddaughter Rue), son Jeffrey and wife Lauren Hitter of Branford Connecticut and brother, Ted Barbier of Swartz Creek, Michigan.
The family will be receiving visitors Monday, December 21 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Bouton Funeral Home, 31 W Church Street, Georgetown, Connecticut. Judy's ashes will be interred in the Memorial Gardens at St. James Episcopal Church on Grosse Ile in a private ceremony in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Family and Children's Agency of Norwalk, Connecticut.
