Obituary

Gary L Moore, 90, of Wilton, CT died at his home on February 11, 2025. He was born on September 4, 1934 to Margaret and Frank Moore in Reynoldsville, PA. Gary spent his youth helping out at his father's Sunoco gas station and had fond memories of his grandfather's pig farm. He was a proud Western Pennsylvanian who got his strong work ethic from his parents, grandparents and siblings.

Gary graduated from Reynoldsville High School in 1952 where he lettered in both football and basketball (his high school teammates referred to him as "Stretch" due to his 6'3" frame). He liked to describe his most thrilling high school accomplishment as a 90-yard defensive touch down when he knocked down a lateral on his own 10-yard line which bounced back directly into his hands and he returned it ninety yards for the touchdown.

Penn State gave him a scholarship to play football after his senior year, but his path changed shortly after matriculating when Gary joined the Army. After basic training in Kentucky he was stationed in Crailsheim, Germany in 1955-56, where he worked as an Army medic. Throughout his life, Gary never went to a medical appointment without mentioning this fact.

Upon returning home, he attended Susquehanna University where he was a Business major and auspiciously met the beautiful love of his life, Stephanie Haase. They were married during their senior year and settled in Bridgeport, CT after graduation and brought two babies into the world. Gary supported the family by working as a Repo Man for GMAC. Home became Wilton in 1963, where they later welcomed another daughter and happily remained for the rest of their lives.

In 1963 he started his successful career in real estate, working in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx first for his father-in-law on West 231st Street and later owning his own office in the same location. Gary merged his company with Robert E. Hill, Inc. in 1983, eventually buying out his partner, Bob Hill, and subsequently selling the business to his daughter and son-in-law. Gary was a founding member and President of the Kingsbridge Business Improvement District.  He continued to travel to the Bronx long after his retirement years to keep an eye on his properties a few days each week. He was well-regarded as a thoughtful and generous businessman and landlord.

Gary is survived by his daughters, Leanne Moore of Norwalk, CT and Kristen Moore Hackett (Stewart) of Ridgefield, CT, three grand-daughters Emma Caroline, Katie Scott and Charlotte Claire as well as three brothers Tom Moore of Dubois, PA, Ted Moore of Atlanta, GA, Jon Moore of Reynoldsville, PA and one sister Marjorie Lux of Jim Thorpe, PA. He is predeceased by his wife, Stephanie and son, Scott.

Gary was happiest when sitting in his rocking chair in Reynoldsville with a martini on the front porch of his childhood house which he maintained as a second home. If Gary could be listening to some Linda Ronstadt music and surrounded by family, all the better – especially with a Steelers or Penn State game queued up on the television.

Burial will be held privately at Hillside Cemetery. In Wilton. A celebration of life will be held in the Spring for both Gary and Stephanie. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Gary's name to the Ridgefield Visiting Nurse Association (RVNA Health) whose hospice nurses are angels on earth, or to Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Gary was an avid supporter of this organization which helps local heroes by supporting fallen first responder families and injured veterans or of course to any local charity of your choice.  Bouton Funeral home in Wilton is handling all arrangements.
