Edward Joseph McCarty of Waterford, CT formerly of Georgetown CT was born on August 2, 1939 at Norwalk Hospital to Harold McCarty and Florence Ashby. He passed away on Good Friday April 3, 2026 after a two week courageous battle following emergency cardio vascular surgery at Yale New Haven Health Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London.
Ed McCarty grew up in Georgetown the eldest of four children. He attended Gilbert Bennett elementary school and graduated from Henry Abbott Technical High School in Danbury where he studied carpentry. At age sixteen, he became a member of the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department and remained a volunteer for fifty years. He was a member of the Catholic Youth Organization of Sacred Heart Church, an explorer scout, and president of the Georgetown Junior Rifle club. He carried an extraordinary devotion to his community throughout his life as evidenced by his fifty year membership to the Georgetown Lions Club.
Ed was very proud to have served in the US Marine Corps as a corporal E-4. in the early1960's during the Vietnam era. After an honorable discharge to pursue his education, he continued his studies at the University of Hawaii and University of Bridgeport studying business law and principles of management.
An accomplished developer and self-made entrepreneur, Ed McCarty had a very strong work ethic. He built hundreds of houses, and dozens of commercial buildings throughout Fairfield County during his long building career. In Georgetown alone he designed and built 941 Danbury Road ,. the Georgetown Fire Department and Cannondale Headquarters. Ed also built Brookfield Lanes in Brookfield in the late 1970's that he owned for over fifty years. He was the contractor for the parish center at Saint Patrick's Church in Redding in 1971, and he helped renovate Sacred Heart Church Hall. Several dog pounds in the region including Bethel Dog Pound were built by Ed McCarty. Always very creative and innovative, McCarty built a modular home factory in Torrington CT before modular homes were popular. He owned the first on site standing seam roof machine in Connecticut. Although a very successful businessman, McCarty often said that he was most proud to be called a carpenter.
A long standing member of the Board of Assessment Appeals, Ed's civic service to the town of Redding encompassed over 40 years. He enjoyed politics and in 1969 he ran as his party's endorsed nominee in a Redding primary for First Selectman.
Ed was an avid New York Giants and NY Mets fan. He also appreciated car racing as his father Harold was a well-known car racer. Above all, and like most residents of Connecticut he was a loyal fan of the UConn Women's and Men's basketball teams.
Throughout his life, Ed loved bowling, traveling, camping, off road exploring and family outings. In his later years, he spent time on his family farm raising cattle in Scotland, CT.
The McCarty family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire care team in the critical cardiac unit at YNHH Lawrence & Memorial Hospital along with a special thank you to the nurses for their professionalism, and the compassionate, loving manner in which they cared for Ed in his final weeks.
