Daniel Edward Casey, beloved father and grandfather, passed away at 94 years of age surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, July 16th. The cornerstone of a large and ever-expanding family, he is survived by his sister Jacqueline Bormann, daughters Laura Horrigan and Christine Baldwin, sons Daniel Casey Jr., Stephen Casey and Brad Casey, as well as 15 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Dan lived life to the fullest and leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and storytelling. 

Born January 27, 1932 in Rockville Centre, New York, Dan attended Hofstra University where he played baseball, and later served in the Navy from 1949–51. After brief stints at the Post Office and General Motors, Dan made a name for himself as a salesman, selling everything from insurance to textiles and eventually printing services. He married the love of his life, Sandra Jane Buschmann, in June of 1956 and stayed by her side until her passing in October of 2010. Together they raised six children including Robert C. Casey, who passed away in 2021. 

Known affectionately as “the Ole Case” to friends and family, Dan was the life of the party and a brilliant raconteur up until his final days. An avid golfer, he made significant contributions to Redding Country Club, including working with celebrated architect Rees Jones to help design the second nine in the late 1970s and acting as club president in 1988 and ‘89. He was proud of the fact that he won many tournaments, including two RCC championships, and had scored five hole-in-ones over the course of his lifetime. 

Those who were lucky enough to know him will remember Dan’s zest for life and absolute inability to be embarrassed, exemplified by his dance moves, his expert heckling and his tendency to burst out in song mid-conversation. Most of all, we will remember the twinkle in his eye and of course, his stories—he had one for every occasion. Dan could spin a yarn about any mundane topic, but he loved to share tales of his childhood shenanigans with younger brother Jim in Long Island; his older brother Robert Charles “Bob” Casey who served as a glider pilot in the Army Air Force and made landings in Normandy during D-Day; his mother Lucienne Didier Casey who emigrated from France and raised eight children as a widow; his courtship with his beloved wife Sandy, whom he regarded as the most beautiful woman he ever knew; and humorous anecdotes from road trips and everyday life with his six children in Huntington, NY, Redding, CT and Santa Cruz, CA. Dan also resided later in life in Fort Pierce, FL and Black Rock, CT. 

A celebration of life fit for our favorite Irishman will be held on Friday, August 21 with calling hours from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Bouton Funeral Home (31 W. Church Street, Georgetown, CT) followed by a 12:00 p.m. service at St. Patrick’s Church on Blackrock Turnpike in Redding, CT. Reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that well-wishers please donate to Operation Hope of Fairfield, an organization working to end hunger and homelessness in Fairfield County, or enjoy a Dewars and water while you think fondly of your favorite memory of the Ole Case.
