Obituary

Annette Smith was born on Sept. 7, 1926, to Charles and Rose Adams.  She was raised in Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn College in 1948 with a B.A. degree in Early Childhood Education.

After WWII, Annette met Robert L. Smith and were married on March 27, 1948, after she graduated from college.  She and Bob lived in Hamilton, NY, for 18 months until Bob finished Colgate under the GI Bill of Rights. During that period, Annette was the Director of the Hamilton Nursery School.

After Bob's graduation, Annette served for 5 years as a teacher at Fresh Meadows Nursery School in Flushing, Queens. In 1956, she and Bob moved to Greenburgh, NY, where they raised their children.  When she was not substitute teaching and being a devoted wife and mother, Annette was very active in community initiatives, both civic and political.

Annette was President of the League of Women Voters of Greenburgh NY and Chair of the Council of Greenburgh Civic Associations.  She served as Legislative Assistant to a NY Assemblyman for 4 years, and several youth and community boards during the 1960's War on Poverty. She was an organizer of volunteers, on the county level, for Governor Rockefeller, and state-wide for a challenger to a US Senate seat from NY.  These are just samples of her civic and political involvements.

In a letter to the editor of the Reporter Dispatch, the countywide newspaper at the time of the Smith's move to Connecticut in 1980, the new chairperson of the Community Association Council wrote: It is quite obvious that both legislators and community activists have long recognized her (Annette Smith) outstanding capabilities, and she has been a much sought-after worker, leader and spokesman for many of those causes and organizations that needed outstanding leadership in the past. She was an active board member of the Westchester Community Action Board, The Union Child Day Care Center and the Greenburgh Community Center among many others."

Annette and Bob moved to Farview Farm, Redding CT in 1980.  She was the administrative partner of Bob's consulting firm while serving on the Redding Conservation Commission and on the Board of the League of Women Voters of Redding.  She also served as a Board Member for the homeowners' associations in CT and FL, where she and Bob had homes.  When they moved to Meadow Ridge in Redding, CT, she tirelessly continued her involvement by serving on the Residents' Board, and as Chairman of the Arts Committee.

Annette Adams Smith passed peacefully on December 27, 2021.  She is survived by sister, Dolores Adams Bilangi, brother Salvatore Charles (Chase), son, Robert Jr.  and his wife Jean and two granddaughters, Drew and Shelby Smith, great-grand daughter Dylan Jean, as well as her daughter Patricia Pisarkiewicz, her husband Steven and two grandsons, Ross and Adam Pisarkiewicz.   Private burial services were held on January 8, 2022, at Umpawaug Cemetery.  A Celebration of Her Life will be held at a later date.
